31 years after the last 780 rolled off the assembly line, production of all of the 780's unique interior and exterior parts ceased. While Volvo made every effort to forecast what replacement parts would be required over the next few decades, they certainly did not stockpile enough to keep the cars on the road three decades later.
It means a lot of cleaning and repair work for the Rebuilding Generations restoration team. Not only are the leather seats being restitched and redyed, but the entire interior trim is being hand cleaned and resprayed to match the original trim color, wear, and sun fading.
Another group is working on engine components such as brake booster brackets or painting and polishing the ABS control unit. Others are working on the wood panels, chipping away at the old broken coating and refinishing them with new sealant. Others are gluing and fiberglassing interior trim pieces. The list is extensive…
We can see that the majority of the interior and engine are being restored while we are replacing with new parts. Countless hours were spent cleaning, sanding, gluing, painting, and refurbishing. It's incredible how good these restored parts look. Everyone is eager to begin reinstalling into the car, which is taking place along the way!
