Repairing Vacuum Bellows Before They Break 780 Concept Restoration

September 13, 2021

If you own a 780 for any length of time, you will notice that the climate control system frequently fails to send air where you want it. On a hot day, you're driving down the road with cold air blowing out the dash vents. When you step on the gas to pass a car, the air stops flowing, despite the fact that the blower motor is spinning at the same speed.

What actually happened?

One of the vacuum bellows that opens and closes the diverter flaps lost pressure and opened (or closed) the diverter flaps in the opposite direction. In the 1980s, many manufacturers used vacuum lines to control bellows, such as those found in the 780. The rubber gaskets around the bellows dry out over time, and the vacuum pressure is lost. To repair, the lower dash must be disassembled, which is a time-consuming task.

The good news for the Concept 780 restoration project is that it has already been disassembled, allowing for a relatively simple restoration. The team tested and replaced each of the four bellows as needed. A hand vacuum tool was used to apply pressure to each bellow. All of the bellows would have been replaced, but they are no longer in stock. We did, however, find two on eBay! The Rebuilding Generations team has completed yet another repair!
